Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation

PNF is a comprehensive physiotherapy treatment concept that was further developed in the 1940s by Dr. Herman Kabat and later by Margaret Knott and Dorothy Voss. It is based on neurophysiological principles and uses the body's own feedback mechanisms (proprioceptors) to improve movement processes and muscle activity.

The special thing about PNF is the three-dimensional, spiral and diagonal movement patterns, which are based on natural everyday movements and involve several joints and muscle groups at the same time. Specific techniques such as rhythmic stabilization, combination of isotonics, hold-relaxation or rhythmic initiation are used to specifically improve muscle strength, coordination, mobility and motor control. The therapist uses verbal commands, visual cues and tactile stimulation to promote optimal movement quality. By integrating dosed resistance, stretching and targeted facilitation, nerve pathways are activated and neural connections are strengthened.

Areas of application:

  • Neurological disorders
  • muscle weakness and coordination disorders
  • Post-operative rehabilitation
  • Increasing performance in sports
